Surgery Service for Dogs

At Queensway Veterinary Hospital, we provide both routine and complex surgeries. Some examples of surgery services we provided are spays, neuters, lump removals, cherry eye removal and emergency procedures. All pets must first see a veterinarian ensure your pet is in overall good health before surgery.

What is expected of me and my pet prior to surgery?

To protect the staff and patients at Queensway Veterinary Hospital, we have a policy that all pets must be vaccinated for Rabies before surgery. Additionally, a thorough exam is required by a veterinarian to determine if your pet is healthy enough for the procedure. You may also want to consent to pre-anesthetic blood work, which is recommended and will give the veterinarian a better picture of your pet’s overall health and whether or not there could be a risk with the anesthetic.

What is pre-anesthetic blood work and should I consent to this?

Pre-anesthetic blood work helps the doctor determine if a patient is healthy enough for general anesthetic by evaluating organ function as well as blood cell rates. Many people think this is only needed for very sick or geriatric patients. However, all candidates for surgery should have pre-anesthetic blood work completed, as some negative results may show up without physical findings.

Does my pet need to stay overnight after surgery?

For routine surgeries, we like to have our patients go home the same day once they have fully recovered. In some special cases, we do ask that your pet stays overnight to avoid additional pain and discomfort. If this is the case, a Queensway team member will give you a call with further details.

I can’t make the 8:00 am drop off time, what can I do?

Queensway Veterinary Hospital is happy to offer a safe place for your pet to stay overnight before surgery.
